Do you ever have a moment of reflection that washes over you like a wave, carrying gratitude, awe, and a little bit of disbelief? Sometimes life’s unexpected challenges, heartbreaks, and perceived setbacks shake our patterns and awaken our souls, nudging—or even shoving—us toward our true purpose. For me, this past year has been exactly that: a whirlwind of turbulence, change, and growth, full of moments that tested me as a work-from-home entrepreneur and as a mother to an incredibly active toddler. Like so many others, my carefully laid plans for the year were completely upended when the pandemic hit, and yet, looking back, I can see the hidden opportunities that arose amidst the chaos.
I began 2020 immersed in work I loved—offering hands-on healing through massage therapy and energy work, guiding in-person workshops and classes designed to help empaths and the highly sensitive understand their unique gifts. Our busy two-year-old spent her days with her favorite babysitters, a pair of local college students who had become a wonderful extension of my nurturing, allowing me to focus on my clients. My husband worked long hours at an automotive repair shop in the next town over, his energy slowly eroded by the monotony and frustration of his job. Though the demands sometimes left me wishing for more family time, we were happy. We had a home filled with love and purpose. It was a good life.

Then the pandemic arrived.
Hands-on healing sessions were suddenly put on indefinite hold. All workshops, classes, and events were canceled. My livelihood felt suspended, leaving me at home with our daughter as stress and anxiety quietly built in our household. Without the familiar trips to the library, youth art center, pavilion, or playdates, and with the Iowa spring still too chilly for outdoor play, I felt the days stretching endlessly. But amid the uncertainty, a spark of possibility emerged. I finally began working on a project that had long lived quietly in the back of my mind—a book. Drawing from my own experiences and the incredible stories of my clients, I began to pour everything I had into writing, embracing the challenge of healing and inspiring others through words when I could no longer do so in person. I knew the journey would offer no immediate financial return, and yet, I dove in with excitement.
And then, as life often does, another wave hit.
One Friday afternoon, my husband came home unusually early. We rushed to the door, eager for some rare family time, only to see his face etched with confusion and worry. “I think I was just fired…” he said.
“I think? What does that mean?” I asked, my heart racing. He explained how his employer had handed him a paycheck and dismissed him without any conversation, explanation, or acknowledgment of the five years he had devoted to the job. Anger and fear surged through me—how would we make ends meet in the midst of a pandemic, with little savings and mounting debts? Yet, as I scanned our situation, a curious sense of relief crept in. That job had been slowly draining him, leaving him anxious and dispirited. Now, amid the uncertainty, we were free—free to create a life shaped by our values, free to spend more time together, and free to give our daughter a father present in her daily life.

The road ahead was not easy. My husband began taking side jobs and plotting his own automotive repair business, while I wrestled with feelings of helplessness. We were barely keeping up financially, and our highly intuitive, strong-willed toddler mirrored my stress, resulting in tantrums, short tempers, and sleepless nights that sometimes felt unbearable. I realized I needed to anchor myself, to draw upon the tools I had cultivated over years of yoga, meditation, and energy work, not only for my sanity but for our family’s well-being.
I discovered that everything we needed to navigate this storm—the calm, the presence, the emotional awareness—was already within us. Could a two-year-old grasp such practices? The answer, joyfully, was yes. Through playful yoga, simple meditation, movement stories, and music, we cultivated emotional understanding together. She began to slow me down, teaching me to notice the joy in puddle splashes, the beauty in sunsets, and the power of simply being present. Slowly, our home became a haven of mindful practice, with both of us learning and growing alongside one another.

As her behavior improved and her sleep habits stabilized, I realized we weren’t alone in this journey. Parents, caregivers, and teachers were all navigating similar challenges, searching for ways to nurture emotional awareness and peace. Children experience big feelings, often without guidance, and adults frequently struggle to model healthy coping strategies. By weaving meditation, movement, and music into our daily lives, we discovered a method that strengthened our emotional intelligence, behavior, and our family bonds. My heart swelled with pride and hope when our little three-year-old said, “It’s okay, Mommy, just breathe… just breeeaaaathe,” recognizing my frustration and guiding me back to calm. Today, she articulates her feelings—sad, frustrated, excited—without lengthy tantrums, demonstrating the power of early emotional awareness.

It was clear I had been called to share this gift with others. The Peaceful Empowerment Project was born, offering simple meditations, joyful movement, and uplifting music to support children and their grown-ups in creating habits that nurture lifelong peace and self-awareness. While countless adult-focused programs exist, parents often hesitate to participate due to interruptions or distractions from their children. Why not invite the children in, and embark on a journey of calm, growth, and connection together?

Looking back, the past year was filled with unexpected plot twists, each one revealing hidden opportunities:
- My husband lost his job—only to discover his potential and begin his own business, growing tremendously along the way.
- My workshops and events were canceled—leading to the creation and release of my first book, Empaths at the Edge.
- Unable to tour for my book—I began mentoring empaths locally and virtually, supporting women through deep transformational growth.
- Our marriage felt fragile—yet choosing intentional, positive growth together brought us closer than ever.
- Hands-on healing became limited—pushing me to connect virtually with women worldwide.
- Our toddler’s boundless energy and constant presence at home—sparked the development of the Peaceful Empowerment Project, creating joyful, mindful routines together.

Through it all, the lesson has been clear: focusing on what truly matters, nurturing love and peace in ourselves and our family, and empowering the next generation allows us to emerge stronger, wiser, and more connected. As I reflect on the year past and set intentions for the year ahead, I am awed by the grace, guidance, and resilience that have carried us through. May your challenges too reveal hidden gifts, guiding you toward a life of peace, empowerment, and heartfelt joy.
